A New Zealand Christmas

When I was young I always knew when Christmas was arriving because of the beautiful pohutakawa tree (the New Zealand Christmas Tree) a native of New Zealand that would come into bloom their spicky red flowers heralding the way for Santa. Nearly 50 years later (OMG that makes me sound so ...old) I still think of them every year and the twangs of homesickness stir when I think of family. Maybe because the last couple of months have been a bit rough health wise I feel it a bit more. I have decided to push 2011 away and move on to 2012. I haven't made a bear in 2 months which isn't a bad thing because I was a little burned out and now am dying to get back into it I'm working on a new pattern and will be having a few weeks off through Christmas and January yeah some time to endulge my muse. In the meantime I would like to wish you all a wonderful Christmas and hope that 2012 is everything you want it to be.

This is Jeremy my donation to the Bears That Care Charity Auction in Melbourne on the 16th of November 2011 to help raise funds for research into ovarian cancer. He is made from South African Mohair which has a silver thread through it. He is disc jointed and wool filled and measures 8 inches (20 cms)and wears an engraved bell on a leather throng. Camera Find

I thought I'd clear out my camera's old photos today and save them to my hard drive. I found photos I had forgotten I'd taken Doh! thats what happens when you use two cameras. Earlier this year (Easter) I took my daughter and friends to the Sydney Royal Easter Show and every year they have doll and bear competitions (No I have never entered call me chicken) I had taken a picture of 1st and 2nd place bears. The winner was a friend of mine Susan Leigh from bearleigh bears with her hot pink fairy bear. I'm not sure the name of the runner up but she is a very pretty bear and beautifully dressed.

Another challenge

My Yahoo group "Bear Makers and Beyond" had a challenge run recently and I joined in we where given a pattern and allowed to make up to 6 changes. I shrunk it down and added elbows and knees changed the head angle and ended up with this little guy. I was pretty happy with him. It always amazes me how when bear makers can all have one pattern (similar in this case) and come up with so many different bears. We found out it was a Monica Spicer pattern afterwards I'd love to know what Monica thinks of them all? Anyway because of copyright I'm not allowed to sell him but that Ok Mums birthday is coming up. Oh MUM.....

Well I've been away on a summer holiday to New Zealand visiting my Mum & Dad Sisters and their families I had a great time but now it is time to get back to work at both my day job and my bears and dolls. I'm gearing up for the Be My Valentine show coming up on the 12th and 13th February and my bears are ready and waiting for their debut. From the 1st of February I'll be able to show you a sneak peak of the three pieces I will have on offer. The next few posts will be places we visited on our road trip home from last weekends Woodend Show. This is a monument to "The Dog on The Tucker Box"just out of Gundegai. It all started with a poem about a bullock driver who experienced such bad luck on one trip near Gundy and later was turned into a song now folklore. In 1932 this monument was erected by the then Australian prime minister. It represents the tenacity and struggle of early Australian against all odds to get the job done no matter what and of course the Aussie sense of humour with the doggy loo out the back.

On Saturday morning I raced over to the post office to pick up a package that the postman had left there for me "International postage requires signature" the card said. I was very excited knowing it had to be a certain little girl I had been waiting for and sure enough Cassidy was wrapped up safe and snug. Well I introduced her to every body and she has become firm friends with Amelia. Now I thought Amelia was small at least small for me (5 inches) but you can see how tiny Cassidy is sitting with her new friend. Megan has created a gorgeous bear and I am so so happy to have won Cassidy in Megans giveaway. Thank you Megan I will treasure her she has come to a very bear friendly home.

New Zealand Quake

I rang my dad this morning for Fathers Day my family are in all the north island of NZ thankfully but we talked about the quake and Dad told me that there have been no deaths but extensive damage to building and property. The quake was felt from the bottom of the South Island around Dunedin right up to Napier in the the North Island it started about 30 miles out of Christchurch in the Tasman. 7.1 on the richter scale (pretty big). Christchurch is one of the major centres in NZ and a lot of people live there. It is also an old city with historic buildings and Catherdrals (Christchurch is known as NZ's city of churches)and they are not quake proof only the modern buildings. Water and sewage are the biggest problems at the moment but the military and civilian aid organisations are in full swing and hopefully will have these problems solved in the next few days. My heart goes out to all the elderly, people on their own and children that have been traumatised by it. All kids when I was in school had regular quake drills not that I have ever been in one (and hope I never am). New Zealand has a nickname "the shaky aisles" it's living up to it right now. Please send a positive thought or prayer to eveyone affected. PS Happy Fathers Day Dad love you.

One of my favourite markets is the monthly Maitland Markets up in the Hunter it's held on the first Sunday each month. At the last market Gordon and I took a ride up there and had a look around. On one of the second hand stalls were these two beautiful vases that I just loved and had to bring home with us. They have never been used and absolutely perfect. My favourite part are the 3 dimensional flowers that have been edged in gold paint. Then last weekend when I was buying my new fabric table at the Salvation Army shop I found the little pink vase which I thought would go perfectly and got it for $1.00 it doesn't get any better than that.

The Littlest Bear

I thought it might be fun to show you part of my private collection I have collected a lot of bears (several hundred)of all styles and kinds and think I pretty much have collections within my collection. These are my smallest bears the largest of these is 2 inches sitting 3 inches standing and the smallest just 1 inch. They come from England Australia and New Zealand and the display case is around 30cms tall and sits on one of our stereo speakers two are crocheted the little brown panda in front and the red devil middle top. Two are sculpted clay. Two are manufactured from world of minatures and two are artist bears. Pictures to come are World of Minatures , Charlie Bears, Artist Bears in all sizes, Manufactured Bears, Resin Bears I'm looking forward to showing them to you.

Gordon & I went to Bunnings today me to get paint and Gordon is adding a gate to the pool fence while we were there we had a look in the rug shop we hadn't intended to buy a rug but.... when I saw this one I thought what a fab shade of red and how nice it would look in our lounge room. The pattern is in brown so that ties into our beige carpet. I am so please with it even the boys liked it.

I took my daughter and one of her friends to see the Musical "Wicked" at the Sunday afternoon matinee in Sydney. We loved it! My favourite of course was the costuming. Fantastic what those wardrobe people can do with fabric! I am in awe. The stage sets too where astounding not to mention the sound effects. Top it of with fabulously talented artists and I can't think of a better way to spend two or three hours.

I was lucky enough to visit the Morpeth Gallery on my last trip to Morpeth (there are two fab bear shops up there Morpeth Bears and Bears Downstairs) where an artist by the name of Gordon Hanley was exhibiting. I bought this LE print from him and he was kind enough to sign it for me I am looking for the perfect frame. My husband feels a connection with Morpeth because the little village of Ellington were he was born and grew up in Northumberland is just a hop skip and a jump away from the market town of Morpeth which back then was an exciting trip out for a farmers son. My husbands name is Gordon and Gordon Hanley is originally from England too. I guess you have to believe in coincidences.

This is my latest bear (no name yet). I had the urge to needle felt so have given him a felted face. I am taking some felted bears to the Queensland show next weekend. I find felting great therapy at the end of the day and it can add great character to the bear. I have a few more that need finishing touches and will try to get them up on my blog before I head north to the sunshine state.

Central Coast Charity Show

Today I was at the Central Coast Charity Doll Bear & Craft Show at the Wyong Race Course which is only 10 minutes from home a bonus not having to travel long distances. This was it's 13th successful year. It was lovely to catch up with my local collectors and met up with doll and bear artists and friends. My feet are killing me but it doesn't matter I have talked and laughed and hugged and chatted I am on a high. These are some of the bears that found their new mums today and I have a warm fuzzy feeling knowing both the Wyong and Gosford Cancer Clinics will be the benefactors of all the hard work done today by Janette and her team of volunteers. Thank you ladies and see you next year.

Cheese anyone

Because I can't show you too much of what I am making because of the upcoming Australian Design Awards (all will be revealed at the Fantasy Ball) I can show you the wonderful new cheese board my daughter presented to me on Friday night after finishing it at school. She has got all her classmates to put their names on it with the pokers burning them into the surface permanently. She thought of that when she was making it I thought that was very clever (but then I am her mum lol) anyway to see the beautiful piece of wood she used I took a photo of that side too. Of course it will never be used and one day I will give it back to her when she reminises about her early high school days.

Well here he is at last Horacio the prototype I was telling you about a few posts ago. My first elephant design. I have all sorts of things in mind to try on this range and can't wait to get started. Horacio has sparked me up and I'm looking forward to several new Heferlumps coming out of the Woodbury Park Studio very soon. He has wired ears and a big tummy for his size (hes about 7inches) a lovely big hump at the back and his arms and legs are shaped around him.

Up and Running

I'm so glad to be back with you all we have had internet access problems with our new PC no blogging no emails no nothing. We lost it completely and my modem wouldn't work I couldn't spare the time to sit down and go through trying to get everything back up and running again my Mum and Dad were visitng for 11 days from New Zealand and we crammed as much in as we could the weather was great and we did lots of day trips and watched the Tennis and had BBQ every night. I haven't slept that well in a long time. Now Sam is back in school and I go back to work tomorrow (and will get a big reality check). I haven't had much time to create so I am feeling a little out of sorts (always feel that way when I don't make something for a while). The New year must bring everyones creative side out so many of my lovely bear and doll friends are working on exciting new creations and so am I. I am making a prototype (can you guess what it is) and tweaking and making changes as I go it's starting to take shape and I'm getting excited about it and hope to finish it soon. So now that things are settling down again after the summer holidays I can get back into my bears ..... I have the next two in my head waiting to arrive.

Sweet 14

We had planned a pool party for Saturday Sam was going to be 14 and it's the middle of summer weather had been dodgy leading up but I kept telling her think positive I had the week off work to organise food etc Sam wanted new swimmers blah blah blah usual 14 year olds build up to the BIG day. Saturday morning arrived and the weather seemed OK some cloud but too high to worry about. We packed the car and did the pick ups and headed for the local public pool. We arrived there to see several excited kids waiting we unloaded the car and walked up to the entrance and STOPPED dead in our tracks the big white board said pool CLOSED Saturday and Sunday for Water Polo comps? OMG It could only happen to me! I looked at Gordon in a state of panic I was gobbed smacked the council would do that on a weekend in the middle of summer? Luckily some of the parents had hung back so there was a hurried alternative arranged at the heated indoor pools at Mingara a 15 minute trip so the kids were ferried down there and Sam got to have her pool party the weather cleared to a beautiful afternoon and all the kids had a ball. I only had to make one extra trip back to Wyong to pick up more kids that had arrived there and back and forth organising pizza's for 15 kids at lunchtime luckily right next door to Mingara. I ended up with sunburn after I had all the kids put it on I was too busy running around like a chook with it's head cut off to put it on Doh. I will never forget Sam's 14th birthday party !

Not a lot of bear making this week last night relaxing after the days events I came up with a new design which I am excited about starting on a prototype tonight.....

A wonderful new year

Hello and welcome to 2010 it's off to a great start for me so far. Santa bought me a lovely new PC Windows 7 and I have finished putting it up today I still have to load up all my files and things of the old (and I do mean old) PC I had. I can't believe how lovely everything looks on all the websites I have been visiting this afternoon the colours are beautiful and it has a 19 inch screen! But wait that's not my best news drum roll please (thats another thing I have sound Wahoo) I have had my very first bear pattern published in the Australian Dolls Bears and Collectables magazine there she is sitting on the cover thanks so much to Sandra and Deb from Woodlands Publishing. I just can't stop smiling. Her name is Strawberry Delight and thats what I am delighted!

A Quick Hello

Life is pretty crazy around here with the lead up to Christmas but now as Christmas Eve is upon us I just want to send a Christmas wish to all my followers I thank you so much for your interest in my bears and the events at Woodbury Park. I love to read your comments and kind words. To all of you a very Merry Christmas have a safe and happy holiday break and I look forward to catching up with you all in a few days.

A Hartfelt Xmas

This is another Xmas Blog Party hosted by the lovely Kelly over at A Stuffed Life pop over and see all the blogs celebrating today.

Over here we are counting down the days until X-Day in our house our favourite day of the year some of us more anxious for the arrival than others. Nicky and Edwin are two very excited little bears who want to help with all the preparations.

First we decorate the house and it always takes me ages to decide which way to go

and then the best fun time we have is decorating the tree.

Then on the 24th we decorate the table and put out our hand made crackers

Let me share how we do it this video will show you how to make your own beautiful crackers in no time and you can use anything to put in them (bling is good charms or beads lots of jokes Santa pictures the kids have made little bears are ALWAYS good to find in them it's a warm up to the big morning!)

Xmas Eve we visit all the local xmas lights in our neighbourhood and then go home and have a drink and our favourite Walnut Fudge the recipe for this was given to me by another bear artist a couple of years ago and I will share it with you all it is delicious enjoy

Nicky and Edwin wish everyone a wonderful Xmas and a safe and healthy New Year and hope Santa brings you something off your wish list and maybe a bear or two.

A little lie down

I just had the best time at Gingers tea party on Saturday that I had to have a little lie down I was so full of tea and cakes. I met the nicest people and of course teddies too. I'm hoping to see them again real soon at Kelly's Xmas Party this Saturday the 12th and get to say hello again.

Xmas Tea for all the Toys

Come on in everyones here Little Ted and Seamus so glad you could make it Mummy has everything ready.

Now how do you take it lemon or cream and sugar Mummy will pour so we don't burn ourselves.

You must try one of our cakes they are a secret recipe (lots of honey filling)Mummies specialty and she makes them look so pretty don't you think.

We love christmas crackers don't you here pull one with me and Mummy can pull one with little Ted.

Oh our favourite part "Christmas Cake" it has lots of fruit and nuts don't worry if you can't fit anything else in you can take a piece home for later Mummy will wrap it up for you.

What a lovely tea party we all had so much fun with yummy food and lots of tea and we liked wearing our paper hats and telling jokes from the crackers. Mummy laughed so hard. It is our favourite time of the year and now we are counting the sleeps until Santa comes we might get our photos taken with him on Tuesday when Mummy goes to the shops. Edwin is an aspiring artist who sculpts with parts off cars (except his beloved old Volvo) and comes up with these fabulous pieces he is our nephew and I feel he has inherited his grandfathers (a retired art teacher's) artistic abilities both his father and my husband missed out some how :) Edwin sent these to me recently and I am so impressed with his work they are awesome. I am very much looking forward to when we can get back to England and see them in real life (so to speak). I believe this young man has a big future ahead of him.(of course I'm not biased).

Mittagong Show

I had a fabulous weekend of BEARS! On Saturday I headed to Newcastle to do a workshop at the lovely Jeanette's with the just as lovely Linda Benson, I have done several of Linda's workshops and have enjoyed all of them very relaxed atmosphere and a great teacher. On Sunday we met a little closer to home and Linda myself and Lyn Parker from Parkers Bears my dearest friend headed for the Mittagong show run by Sandra Wigzell editor of Australian Bear Creations. It was a good show and I enjoyed meeting up with more friends Margaret Burke from Nikkel Bears who talked me into the photo Sue Leigh from Bearleigh Bears Lorraine Almond of Almond Bears and Valma Bolton and family from Tedebits so it was like old home week really we all had good shows sales wise (especially Lyn who nearly sold out) and got the news that Sandra will no longer be organising this show and Valma and family will be taking over so there was a lot of buzz around the room we were asked for in put and some great ideas came out so we are really looking forward to next year.

Christmas Swap

Aren't they just the cutest TBACA members had a swap for Christmas and I was so very lucky to pair up with Nancy from Dog Patch Critters and she made me this gorgeous little puppy "Foster" I have admired Nancy's bears and puppies for a long time so I am just delighted. Thank you so much Nancy. Foster travelled all the way from Florida with his wardrobe of bandana's they are sooo cute while Gingerbread is my bear I made especially for Nancy. I had my fingers crossed she would be happy with him. I really enjoyed making him and was a bit sad to see him go but he's just soaking up that warm Florida sun now lucky little bear.

A Pledge

In the wake of the devastating bush fires in Victoria early this year I made a pledge to the Red Cross to donate blood 4 times in the upcoming year to help not only those victims but thousands of others that need blood every day for life saving operations (my dad had a quadruple bypass last year) cancer victims needing top ups during chemo and new babies that can't make blood to fight for their precious little lives. Don't get me wrong I have never liked needles but I have persevered and today completed that pledge and I am so very happy that I did and I will continue to do so knowing what I am doing does help. The needle bit does get easier truly.

Hello Possums

Loris Hancocks Possums are amazing as are her minatures yesterday I did a workshop with her at Tedebits in Sydney doing this amazing mummy and baby duo. The photos are of the shop sample that Loris had done to promote the workshop. It was a very full and intense day I was exhausted by the time I got home (the long drive doesn't help)no one actually finished the work but took away all the information we need to finish and when I get the chance after next weekends workshop and show at Mittagong I will finish mine and put up the photos. I could have been there today doing her fabulous Bilby but we have dance school photos to be done this afternoon I know where I'd rather be.

TT Challenge Friends for Life

This pair were inspired by a challenge on the Teddy Talk site entitled "A Friend for Life" the teddy is about the smallest I have ever done and I wanted to age him to look like an old bear. The horse is sculpted from paper mache his long legs from knitting needles messy to do but a lot of fun and I am pleased with the way he turned out.

I spent a bit of time just looking through and saw things that I have wanted to make but hadn't gone looking for a pattern or tutorial yet. Air Brush Art

I wanted to add some depth to my bears by using airbrushing for shading etc so this morning I did a class at our local hobby shop in Gosford for airbrushing techniques. What a lot of fun it was! My best 3D images for the day were my moon/ball and my link chain I was so pleased with them. So many possibilities ran through my head. Advance classes teach portrait art and advanced techniques on resin etc. I will practice the basics and get more comfortable with the
brush (already planning on getting a second one) Two great guys taught the class and have a wealth of knowledge on airbrushes. Mike and Richard, Mike works professionally with the airbrush and has worked in the film industry he did a lot of the scenery/drops in Moulin Rogue.

Andre Rieu

Last night I dragged Gordon and Sam off to see Andre Rieu at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre I had my doubts I was doing the right thing neither of them had ever been to a "classical concert" but after seeing him last year in Sydney with his magnificent outdoor show I was determined for them to experience it. I absolutely adore his showmanship and talent. I could gush about him for hours but I won't. I will simply say that at the end of the concert after seeing my usually reserved and quiet husband and easily bored daughter clapping singing stamping their feet laughing and so intent on the music, Gordon turned to me and said get tickets for next year (Wahoo) and Sam proudly displays his poster on her bedroom door over shadowing her usual choice of music idols I am quietly sitting here smiling to myself but on the inside YES!!!!!!!

Flashback

Next month will mark the 2nd anniversary of my very first Woodbury Park Bear. I look at him and see all the mistakes and fondly remember how proud I was of him. The evolution of my bears moves forward and with each new one I feel the same emotions. I strive for that perfect bear whatever that may be and love every step of the way.

The Twilight Zone

Sometimes depending on the state of my mind somewhere in that zone between waking and sleeping when you are not sure if you are dreaming or not or that very first thought for the day that is so vivid I know something will cross my path. What am I talking about ??? Take this morning my first thought today was of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez WHY I don't know but not 10 minutes ago (and the reason I'm writing this post) I was looking on a website and googled "Woodbury" and this is what popped up. Check out the bottom right hand corner. Is that coincidence I mean what are the odds? These things happen to me often and I just accept that they do. When a phone rings I sometimes know who's calling before I answer. I had my scissors sharpened this week and was thinking about them and looked at my mobile the second before the call came that they were ready to be picked up. OK so now you think I'm weird right?
